Language and Culture Centre feasibility study
14 November 2010
PAW Media has received Granites Mines Affected Area Aboriginal Corporation funding for a feasibility study into the establishment of a Warlpiri Language and Culture Centre at Yuendumu. Initial ideas for the Centre include the provision of a viewing room for items from the PAW Media archive, a library of books and media relevant to PAW language groups, and displays of local history and cultural material.
Georgia Curran, an anthropologist with strong connections into the Yuendumu community will be commencing the feasibility study in late October. She will be consulting with local community members on questions such as whether the Centre will actually be of use to the community, where a Centre should be sited, who should look after it, and what protocols are needed. Georgia will also be looking at the potential use of the Centre to support tourism, as well as visiting researchers.
The feasibility study will provide the foundations for development of a business plan and identification of appropriate funding sources.■■■
