55 minute radio documentary played over the PAW Radio Network. The documentary profiles the Baptist Church and pentecostal churches in Yuendumu and brings you the sounds of preaching and singing in the open air of Yuendumu.

Yuendumu is community of around 800 people situated on Anmatyerr land about 300 km northwest of Alice Springs on the Tanami Track. The population is mostly Warlpiri. Established in 1946 as a government rations depot, it wasn’t long before a Baptist Mission was set up and later, the Little Sisters of Jesus, a Catholic order, arrived. Both have become an enduring part of the community.

In Yuendumu these days, as in other remote Aboriginal communities, the Pentecostal movement has become a strong presence with a vibrant array of individual churches operating all over the community.

Wati Kura (recorded live at Yuendumu Sports Weekend)
From the Aboriginal Rules soundtrack.
Sung by Red Sand Band and recorded live at Yuendumu Sports Weekend 2006.

Director's notes:
"Red Sand band are from Amata in South Australia. Led by Stewart Gaykamanu, they play an upbeat 'desert reggae' with strong vocal harmonies. They won the 'Best Reggae' trophy at Yuendumu Sports Weekend in 2006 that took place during the filming of Aboriginal Rules."

CD Producer's notes:
"This song became the travelling soundtrack to all the football trips after Sherman (Team Captain) spent a week driving laps of the community with it blasting out of his car stereo. There's just something about this song. After a while, you find yourself singing along, despite the fact you don't know Pitjantjatjarra! It's from the PAW Radio broadcast of that Saturday night where the Battle of the Bands was played out on the stage next to Big Shop and hundreds of people were dancing in the dust. This song is played several times during the documentary". (Alex Jarvis)

Written by Gordon Jangala Robertson

From the Aboriginal Rules soundtrack.

Director's notes:
"This song has been one of the favourites in Yuendumu for years. Originally recorded with BlackStorm, this track was just Gordon and his acoustic guitar live to air in a PAW radio broadcast in 2002. This is one of those songs that you can listen to over and over again. It talks about land, culture and family... things very important to Warlpiri people, which is why we chose it to play during the football montage at the end of the documentary".

Lyrics by Courtney Singleton, music by Luke Sullivan

Director's notes:
"Courtney wrote these lyrics as a poem and turned it into this song with the help of Luke Sullivan who was out at Yuendumu for music workshops. This haunting song was not in the final cut of the documentary, but we felt that it shared some of the themes we were exploring and stirred everyone's emotions the first time we heard it".

I Watch them Leave

I’m sitting here alone nobody knows
I watch them walk away from this place
They are leaving forever and they are never coming back

My people are walking away from their families
and their friends and they're never coming back
I watch them leave, I watch them go
and they never come back home.

I see them crying, I see them dying and they never stop it

And I see my friends and family in another place
And I cry in my heart, nobody know how sadly

My people are getting hurt, they cry
and they never stop it, nobody can
They can run but they can’t hide forever

My people are walking away from they families
and friends and they never come back
I watch them leave, I watch them go
and they're never coming back home.

When I see on TV
I see people dying, children suffering
and terrorists taking their lives.

Why can’t my people love each other?
Why can’t we be in peace?

I see mothers and fathers leaving each other
from fighting and cheating
and children think they did something wrong

People lying and stealing from one another
and young people losing their lives
not caring about themselves
and not listening to their mothers and fathers

My people are walking away from they families
and friends and they're never coming back
I watch them leave, I watch them go
and they're never coming back home

I see my friends and families
coming back to this place
and I cry happily for my family
to hug them, to be with them

This song from the Aboriginal Rules soundtrack, was a collaborative effort between Crocodile Johnson and Delwyn Granites of Yuendumu, and Elf Tranzporter and DJ Wasabi (musos).

It originated with a recording with Crocodile singing what he called a Warlpiri song he said was associated with the game of Purlja. We also recorded some clapping, boomerangs and found some sounds from the football games. At the time, Elf Tranzporter and DJ Wasabi were running Hip Hop workshops with Incite Youth Arts and the Mt Theo Program. They worked with Delwyn to write and perform his lyrics about football. They then worked on mixing the track and created this funky song: Purlja vs Football. It plays near the beginning of the documentary, during the sequence where Simba explains the rules of football.

Wriiten by Ned Jampijinpa Hargraves
Ned Hargraves appears in the documentary in his role as Football Manager. He is also an accomplished musician whose most famous song is 'Warlpiri Warriors' recently re-recorded by Rising Wind Band.

Director's notes:
"This track was something we worked on for the opening sequence where Francis Kelly was acting as The Bushman. A longer version narrates the story in 'Japu Japu', a short film on the DVD. Ned and I worked on the translations and then Alex recorded Ned singing it to the tune of a traditional Warlpiri song. It's what we in the Northern Territory call 'gammon'. Well maybe... I think I've heard it a thousand times now and can't get it out of my head. (Liam Campbell)".

Excerpt of track from the Aboriginal Rules soundtrack CD, available from our online shop.

CD Producer's notes:
"Recorded at different locations around Nyirrpi with lots of people dropping in and out and checking out what was going on. One of the places we recorded was Gordon's front porch where his pet camel 'Gypsy' kept trying to join in. Sometimes after working in the day, Gordon would have a concert at night on his porch and everyone would dance and sing along. Lindsay, who used to coach the Yuendumu Magpies, sang backing vocals in the BRACS room after we moved the laptop and mics there. One day Gordon and I went out to Karrku and he told me there were still people who hadn't come out of the desert yet. You can hear it as the soundtrack to the football film montage in the DVD extras." (Alex Jarvis)

This video is a record of the very first TV transmission by Warlpiri Media Association in Yuendumu in April 1985. This transmission resulted in Warlpiri Media Association being recognised as the operator of the first Aboriginal TV station in Australia. However the timing with the first TV transmission from Ernabella in South Australia was very close and the activities of both communities in advocating for the media rights of remote communities placed both communities into the role of progenitors of Aboriginal TV in Australia.

The video features Andrew Japaljarri Spencer and Francis Jupurrurla Kelly both of whom were key figures in the establishment of the TV station. The first scenes show the setting up of an "anchor" desk using whatever resources are to hand. The transmission was typical of the content of TV station - news, local children doing a show and tell, visitors dropping in, and community announcements.

The painting used as the set decoration is an important part of the history of Warlpiri Media Association. It was painted by Japalajrri Spencer to show the story of how Warlpiri Media Association would support outstations through the reach of AUSSAT. The painting is still held by PAW Media in its Yuendumu offices. More information on the history of Warlpiri Media is availablle on our History page.

Back to the video - there are no prizes for working out what the sound of scratching is at the start of the video.

A kangaroo looking for a home
The kangaroo is looking for a home. He asked the emu, "Can I sit in your nest?"

The emu said, "No. Go away."

The kangaroo said, "Where can I find a warm place?" He came across a mountain devil in the grass. He asked "Can I sleep here?"

The mountain devil said, "No. Go away".

He went to the wild cat and said to him, "Can I sleep in the hollow with you?"

The wild cat said, "No. Go away"

He went to the euro and asked him, "Can I sleep in your cave?"

The euro said, "No. Go away."

The kangaroo couldn't find a home, so he went back to the spinifex and mulga and sandhills for ever and ever.

Story about two mothers and their babies
A long time ago in the dreamtime there lived Napurrurla. Napurrurla would dig way down deep under the ground, digging for bush potato, and she would put her baby down and the baby would crawl around day after day.

While Napurrurla was busy digging under the ground, another woman came with her baby and she saw the baby and said to herself, "What a beautiful baby. What shall I do? I'll take this baby and put my baby in his place." So the woman took the baby south of Yajarlu to a place called Karnilpa near Mt Leibig and she left her baby by Napurrurla's hole.
When Napurrurla came out from the hole and looked for her baby and saw another baby she said, "Where is my baby and where has this baby come from and who put her here? Where is my baby? Where did she come from and where are the footprints? I'll take this baby back to the mother who left her." So Napurrurla found the footprints and followed the tracks and said, "the tracks came from the south".

Napurrurla went south to Karnilpa which is near Mt Leibig. Karnilpa is a big mountain which is south of Mt Leibig (Yamurnturrngu). Napurrurla took the baby to the woman and said to the other woman, "Here is your baby. I want my baby back because you stole my baby". The woman who stole the baby felt ashamed. Napurrurla said, "Here is your child". She gave the baby back to the other woman and she took her own baby back to Yajarlu.

This is the place where Napurrurla and her baby stayed and is where Napurrurla and her baby went down the hole. So there is a small soakage there at Yajarlu.

The Giant Water Snake
A long time ago the people had been without meat for a long time. One man went with his son a long way off, looking for meat. Later they went west. They had never been to that country before. People used to stay away from that country because a giant water snake used to live there. They walked a long way through Spinifex country and along beside some hills. They went into the hills to look for euros.

In the evening they came to some big hills. They climbed up the rocks. A big wind sprung up. Then suddenly the giant water snake came out after them. The huge water snake rose up very high, knocking over trees and rocks.

“Wake up! Look at that monster, that huge giant water snake coming out of the ground!”

“Oh help! Let’s run away from that thing!”

The two frightened men fled further west. They climbed down to the bottom of the hills. After running they were tired. They sat down.

“Let’s get fire-wood, it’s too cold”

They built themselves a wind break because of the cold wind and lit a fire, that same night. They fell asleep by the fire in the shelter of the wind break.

They had only been asleep for a little while when they heard a voice like the wind. They saw the monster water snake. It had found them sleeping. The father woke up and pointed at the giant water snake.

“Make a big fire!”

The giant snake rose up higher than ever.

The father shouted to the son, “Let’s get out of here fast! That monster will get us”.

“Yes let’s go back east this time, through that gap in the hills.”

So off they ran, father and son. They had gone a long way when the father grew tired.

"Let’s lie down here for a bit. I’m too tired! Let’s make a wind break. It’s too cold. Let’s light a fire."

After that they went to sleep. They were still sound asleep when the big wind started howling. The son woke up. He saw the giant water snake coming out of the ground very close to them. He picked up a fire stick. He tried to wake up his father but he was too frightened to move. The water snake was rising up high in the sky. They started lighting fires all around.

The father shouted, “Make a bigger fire!”

The giant water snake became even bigger.

Then they said to each other,
“Let’s get out of here while we’re still alive. It will kill us!”

Then the water snake sank down slowly and went into its hole again.

The two frightened men went back east over the hills that same night to get away from the giant water snake. They kept running over the hills and across the spinifex all night, right up till morning. The son was the first to reach the camp, still shaking with fear, he brought the news to the other people.

The people saw him coming and as he arrived they asked him, “Why are you running? What are you frightened of? What did you see?”
Then after they had arrived, they told the story to their family.
"We saw a huge giant water snake. It came out after us.”

The two men’s wives were waiting in their camp unaware of what had happened. From their humpy they saw the two men run in and tell the other people about the giant water snake.
“Hey! What’s going on? What has happened that makes you run back so frightened with no meat?”
“There’s a huge giant water snake living in that country, it tried to kill us.”
After hearing the story, the two women said to the other people, “Let’s go away from this place because of this thing. Let’s go east, away from the giant water snake.”
So the people got ready to leave. In the evening when it became cool, they set off. When it was dark, across the hills they saw that giant water snake burning like fire.
The people said, “Oh! Look over there, the giant water snake is coming out. So it is true what you two told us. If we had stayed there the giant water snake would have got us all! That country belongs to the water snake.”

So the people went to another place in the east. They stayed camping in the east for ever. They went hunting for meat where there was no giant water snake.

Story about the snake
On a hill there was a waterhole, everyone loved to go swimming all the time. When it got dark, big clouds of rain started to roll in, and it rained hard all night. A lot more rain came and filled up the waterhole, so a huge snake went into the water. Next day, two men came to the waterhole and saw that the waterhole was filled up. Then a big wind came and blew them into the murky water and the snake rose up and swallowed them.

Blue tongue Nungarrayi stayed at the soakage place. She was crying for Jangala. Nungarrayi started singing for her husband.
She was crying, 'M m m m'.

She was crying for Jangala. Jangala made a fire and Nungarrayi could see the fire and started crying. She started walking carrying the fire stick but the fire went out. The fire was still burning a long way off and then she started crying again for Jangala. She went and saw that Jangala had left for hunting. Jangala came home and saw Nungarrayi and was happy to see her.
Jangala asked Nungarrayi, 'Yeah, what did you come for?'
Nungarrayi said, 'I have come for you because of the fire you burned and it made me feel lonely for you'.
They both went away happy and stayed forever at Karrinyarla at the soakage. Two boys were born at Karrinyarla and they became blue tongue lizards. That's why you can see that blue tongue lizards have a special dark mark under their eyes from crying.

Story of the Crimson Chat
In the Dreamtime, when all the birds and creatures were all people, there lived a lady with two sons. One day they all went out hunting, gathering yams and other things to eat. Then their mother told her two sons not to go south to the big swamp or the monster would get them.

While they were hunting, the two boys were amazed by a bird who was whistling. Never before had they heard such a lovely sound. They came closer. Then the bird flew away to another tree and another. The two boys kept on chasing the bird deep into the heart of the swamp. They didn't realise they were being lured by a magaical monster. He grabbed hold of them and took them down under the water. The two boys started yelling and shouting.

Meanwhile their mother heard a faint whisper in the air. Then she looked around and saw that her two boys were missing. She ran to another woman and asked her, "Did you see my two boys?"

The woman said, "No, I haven't seen them."

The mother then thought to herself, "Perhaps they are at the water." She ran to the swamp and saw the blood in the water. Then she saw big bubbles on the water. She burst into tears and went home crying. She hit herself with a digging stick until the blood came running down her chest.

After a while the broken-hearted mother died of grief. Then she turned into a beautiful red-breasted crimson chat. you can see the blood stain on that bird's breast even today.
