Watch them leave - excerpt only

16 April 2011

Lyrics by Courtney Singleton, music by Luke Sullivan

Director's notes:
"Courtney wrote these lyrics as a poem and turned it into this song with the help of Luke Sullivan who was out at Yuendumu for music workshops. This haunting song was not in the final cut of the documentary, but we felt that it shared some of the themes we were exploring and stirred everyone's emotions the first time we heard it".

I Watch them Leave

I’m sitting here alone nobody knows
I watch them walk away from this place
They are leaving forever and they are never coming back

My people are walking away from their families
and their friends and they're never coming back
I watch them leave, I watch them go
and they never come back home.

I see them crying, I see them dying and they never stop it

And I see my friends and family in another place
And I cry in my heart, nobody know how sadly

My people are getting hurt, they cry
and they never stop it, nobody can
They can run but they can’t hide forever

My people are walking away from they families
and friends and they never come back
I watch them leave, I watch them go
and they're never coming back home.

When I see on TV
I see people dying, children suffering
and terrorists taking their lives.

Why can’t my people love each other?
Why can’t we be in peace?

I see mothers and fathers leaving each other
from fighting and cheating
and children think they did something wrong

People lying and stealing from one another
and young people losing their lives
not caring about themselves
and not listening to their mothers and fathers

My people are walking away from they families
and friends and they're never coming back
I watch them leave, I watch them go
and they're never coming back home

I see my friends and families
coming back to this place
and I cry happily for my family
to hug them, to be with them
