Yuendumu Battle of the Bands 2011
07 August 2011
Saturday 30th July saw bands from far, wide and close to home get up on PAW Media's music stage to compete for big prizes, as well as just have a great time, in the annual Battle of the Bands. The winners were Warnayaka Band of Lajamanu (shared with the lead singer of the North Tanami Band) - 1st prize, Tableland Drifters of Tennant Creek - 2nd prize, and Curtis Fry and Jimmie Langdon - 3rd prize. A special country and western prize was awarded to Harry Jones whose C&W outfit wowed the crowds.
This was the first year that the new stage has been used for Battle of the Bands, and it was generally agreed that it was a great space. Hundreds of people attended the event, with more and more coming as the night wore on and the bands increased the decibel levels.
PAW Media broadcast the event live over its Radio Network, and we got comments from people in other communities that the music was some of the best live yapa music that had been heard for a long time.
Thanks to the Mt Theo Program for putting on a BBQ, to Winanjakari Music Centre for the sound mix, and to the PAW Media staff who worked hard and long to make it a great night.
